World of Slick Music – Vanessa Williams
It’s been a while since last post…about 2 months and well not that i’m been that busy rather did other stuff than writing but here and now i’m back in business so to speak!
Anyway today i’m gonna write about a beautiful and very versatile woman called Vanessa Williams.
So as always let’s go way back to the year of 1963 and March 18 cause that was the year and date when she was born in Bronx, New York. Both her parents were music teachers so the music is in her dna then you might say. On her birth announcement her parents prophetically wrote “Here she is: the future Miss America”. I’ll get back to that further on. As i mentioned the parents were music teachers so she grew up surrounded by music. She studied classical, jazz dance, french horn piano and violoin. At the age of 12 her parents received the Presidential Scholarship for Drama at the Carnegie Mellon University. However she attened the Syracuse University on another instead.
Then in 1981, she joined Syracuse’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, Department of Drama as a music theater major. She stayed there through here sophomore years until she, as the first Afro American woman ever, was crowned Miss America in 1984 in September 1983. Thou several weeks before the end of her so called reign a scandal arose when some unauthorised nude pictures of Vanessa were published by Penthouse Magazine. They had bought those pictures. Beacuse of this scandal he was pressed to relinquish her title. Many years later she did get an official execuse for what happened back in 1984 and for things that was told to her.

As with the most scandals they fades out and media and people finds other things to focus on. A couple years after all this drama Vanessa hit the recording studios and debuted as a singer with the 1988 album The Right Stuff. The album featured singles The Right Stuff which reached #1 spot on Hot Dance Songs, Dreamin’ which reached #1 on R&B and 8 on Billboard Hot 100. A few years later the second album was released The Comfort Zone it topped Billboard R&B album chart and contained Billboard Hot 100 number one hit Save the Best for Last.

So far how her music career got started but she’s also an actress and her tv-apperance debut came in 1984 on a episode of The Love Boat. Then through the rest of the 80:s and 90:s she continued making apperances in many different tv-series and shows like Saturday Night Live, Fresh Prince in Bel Air most famous for launching the career of a certain Will Smith. Other shows were Ally McBeal, Boomtown to name a few. First tv movie was Perry Mason: The Case of the Silenced Singer. She continued this with different apperances in different tv series and movies basically through the entire 90:s and early 2000:s.
In 2006, Williams received considerable media attention for her comic/villainess role as former model/magazine creative director turned editor-in-chief Wilhelmina Slater in the ABC comedy series Ugly Betty.
That was some of her drama/acting side but since this blog is about music let’s go back the that topic again. In 1995 she recorded a song called “Colors of the Wind” and it was featured in the 1995 Disney animated movie Pocahontas. The song won an Oscar for Best Original Song, not bad! It reached #4 on Billboard Hot 100. Until today she has released 11 albums in her own name and the last one came 2012 and is a christmas album and speaking of christmas since we’re livng in Decemeber and as everyone knows it’s also the Christmas month! Therefor i’ll have a bonus for you, a christmas duet with Bobby Caldwell.
Vanessa and Bobby Caldwell singin their christmas duet at the Late Night Show with Jay Leno. And how do i know that you might think? Easy cause behind Vanessa and Bobby you’ll see Kevin Eubanks (guitar) and Marvin “Smitty” Smith (drums) who were long time members of the Late Night Show band.
Still we’re gonna have a song with Vanessa herself and that one is called “Let’s Love” and it’s taken from the 2005 album Everlasting Love, picture below. Now it’s time for a little update here on March the 27 2016 since i discovered it was not an original song written exclusively for Vanessa as i thought. It turned out it was an old song from way back in 1975 and then recorded by soul/funk group Ohio Players well there you go!
So as always enjoy your listening!!
