World of Slick Music – Terri Lyne Carrington

Hi folks!
Long time no posting…guess i’ve been to lazy to write some…but today i’m back with a very talented and beautiful “colleague” of mine and what i meant with that i’ll tell you later ok? Anyway as the title says it’s time for a woman again and her name is Terri Lyne Carrington.

Terri Lyne Carrington

She’s beautiful don’t you all agree but most of all she’s one awesome drummer, composer, record producer, Grammy Award Winner, entrepreneur. Let’s go back, way back to August the 4th in 1965 cause that was the date she entered this world in Medford, Massachusetts. Her mother played the piano as a hobby and her father was a saxplayer and president of the Boston Jazz society. She got the music with the mothers milk so to speak lol!                        At the age of 7 she was given a set of drums by her grandfather Matt Carrington who had played with legends such as Fats Waller and Chuck Berry.

After studying privately for 3 years she gave her first major performance at the Wichita Jazz Festival with jazz trumpet giant/legend Clark Terry. At this time i believe she was around 10 years old or so, major talent anyone?!                                                                                  This was only the beginning you might say cause at the age of 11 she received full scholarship at the Berklee College of Music. Well done i’d say and respect! Whilst at Berklee she got to hang out with people like guitarist Kevin Eubanks, perhaps most famous for beeing Jay Leno’s sidekick for many years while beeing the leader for the studio band. Some other guys were saxplayers Donald Harrison and Greg Osby.

A quite youg Terri Lyne along with 2 iconic jazz drummers Tony Williams (left) and Roy Haynes (right).
She did some studies under drum instructor Alan Dawson and made a private recording called TLC and Friends and these friends were Kenny Barron (piano), Buster Williams (bass), George Coleman (saxophone) and her father. She began traveling all cross the country and doing clinics when she was still in high school.                                                 Encourage by her mentor another iconic jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette she moved to New York in 1983 still quite young but obviously she was ready for it so who cares how old she was. When in New York she got to work with many different jazz artists such as David Sanborn, Stan Getz, Pharoah Sanders, James Moody, all sax players. She also got to work with trumpet player Lester Bowie and vocalist Cassandra Wilson to only name a few…

Terri Lyne and saxman Stan Getz.
Later she relocated to Los Angeles where she among many other things was the house drummer for The Arsenio Hall Show on tv. You know no matter if you’re living/working in L.A. or NYC you still get to work or tour with a lot of bad cats! No gotta do so much more namedropping…could like go on and on and on…you know what i mean. In 1988 she began focusing on beeing her own recording artist and write her own material and in the following year her official debut album Real Life Story was released. A lot of great musicians were featured on this album, many well known in jazz circles then one more kind of outsider Carlos Santana cause you don’t think of him foremost as a jazz musician or maybe you do?

This is how her like official debut album Real Life Story looks like.
Just like every other musician she’s busy touring, recording, doing clinics pretty much everywhere!                                                                                                                                                           So let’s try to finish this thing today, as i’ve mentioned earlier i ain’t gonna mention so many more names but a few more however. When today’s song first was released she was only 5 years old meaning it first was released in 1970. It was the title song from what would become the last released like official album by a band that changed the music world forever, The Beatles. I know it’s kinda lame with a cover but what can i do if the most slick song is a cover?! The song is called Let It Be and is rearranged into a soul-gospel versionfeaturing Lori Perri on vocals andEverette Harp on sax. Still you can hear and feel the famous melody from the Beatles version. Anyway it’s taken from the More To Say Real Life Story: NextGen.) album from 2009, see pic below.
