Been a while since last time but today i’m back again with a new edition of World of Slick Music. Today’s artist is a guitarist and goes under the name of Doc Powell. Born and raised in Spring Valley, New York He discovered music early in life, by the age of 6 the New York native already was playing guitar inspired and influenced by George Benson.
Then a some years later in his teen he was recording and performing music live not bad i’d say and i guess that is what characterizes major talents cause obviously he was one! This didn’t passed unnoticed in the buisness cause it drawed the attention to artists like soulsinger Wilson Pickett who choosed Doc to be his musical director. Doc wasn’t old at all at this time around 20, someone said talent? 😉 Another giant who liked what he saw and heard was singer Luther Vandross whom also hired Doc for the same job as Wilson Pickett did. Doc worked with Luther for over a decade.
Picture above shows Luther Vandross (left) and Doc (right) in 1978.
He has very busy during the 1980:s working with artists like Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin, Teddy Pendergrass, Vanessa Williams, Stevie Wonder to name a few. Then in the early 1990:s he decided to focus on a solo career thou his first solo album came already in 1987 “Love Is Where It’s At” see pic below.
He received a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Instrumental for his cover of the classic Marvin Gaye tune “What’s Going On” with this album. He has contiued making albums ever since in his relaxing smooth jazz style. So since it’s Sunday this means today’s song is a Gospel tune or at least Gospel inspired. The song is taken from the “Laid Back” album, picture below, released in 1996 and the song is called “Sunday Morning” .
