Hi i’m back again and to begin with i’d like to say Happy Birthday to Michael McDonald 63 years young!!
Today it’s all about a male artist who on this very day, February the 12th 1952 was born as you already figured out lol 😉
Michael is a male baritone singer and has a very significant voice. He has a very good reputation in the music business and has recorded and either performed or co-written songs with for example Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross to name a few.
As the headline says his name is Michael McDonald and started his career by supporting the band Steely Dan by doing background vocals on some of their records in the mid 70:s. Towards the end of the 70:s he joined the group The Doobie Brothers and made 4 albums with them before leaving to pursue a solo career. During his years with the group they got at least 3 bigger hits such as “Takin’ It To The Streets”, “Minute By Minute” and perhaps one of the group’s biggest hit what so ever “What a Fool Believes” who received heavy airplay and which Michael co wrote with old friend Kenny Loggins. Thou Michael left Doobie in the early 80:s they’ve remained friends and have performed together many times since his departure.
Pictures showing Michael, front right, with The Doobie Brothers late 70:s and a promo pic for the tour with Steely Dan. I mentioned Steely Dan earlier and some years ago they toured around the U.S. together with Michael, see pic above.
In 1983 he married singer Amy Holland and together they’ve got 2 children one boy and one girl.

So how has his own career been? Quite successful i’d say, at least in the 80:s he had some big hits which the duet with James Ingram, “Yah Moh Be There” i believe was the most famous. The song was co-written by McDonald, Ingram, Ron Templeton and the producer of the song, Quincy Jones. He also had some other hits such as “I’ll Be Your Angel”, “I Keep Forgetting (Every Time You Near)”, “Sweet Freedom”. Michael has won 5 Grammy Awards, see list below.
1979: Record of the Year for “What a Fool Believes” (The Doobie Brothers)
1979: Song of the Year for “What a Fool Believes” (with Kenny Loggins)
1979: Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus for “Minute by Minute” (The Doobie Brothers)
1979: Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocals for “What a Fool Believes” (The Doobie Brothers)
1984: Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for “Yah Mo B There” (with James Ingram)
In 2010 he toured with a hobby project called “Dukes of September” including Donald Fagen of Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs, picture below. Left to right on the pic Donald Fagen, Michael and Boz Scaggs.
On a episod in 2013 of the Late Night Show with Jimmy Fallon along with Justin Timberlake Michael appeared in segement with Jimmy and Justin with J & J sporting Michael’s like trademark white hair and beard plus his typical voice. Check out videolink below!
What kind of music does Michael do then?
Not so easy to just laber it soul or jazz or something else, the thing is that his style is a mix between soul/blue eyed soul, funk, jazz, gospel, west coast. Call it whatever you feel like. However it´s often very classy and elegant music he does.
Latest album came 2008 called “Soul Speak”, picture below, on which he mostly inpreters classic soul songs. and he still tours world wide.
His first solo album was released in 1982 and was called “If that what it takes” and today´s song is from this album and it´s called “I keep forgettin’ (every time you near)”.
This song was heavy sampled by rapper Warren G on his smash hit “Regulate” from 1994.
So enjoy your listening as always!!
