World of Slick Music – Brian Culbertson

Brian Culbertson
Well i’m back again since, as you already know, i got no so called life ūüėČ Anyway today it’s about a multi instrumentalist, producer, songwriter…and he goes under the name of Brian Culbertson. It was on January the 12th 1973 when he arrived to this world in Decatur, Illnois.

This guy discovered music early and began playing piano at the age of 8, drums at 9, trombone at 10…then in his early teenage he picked up the bass! Told ya he’s a multi-instrumentalist. Here in Sweden where i live we have an saying “you take what you got” whenever you gotta do something. For Brian this meant using various equipment he could find home until he had saved enough money to buy a Macintosh IIci. His mother had taken some piano lessons herself to she helped Brian there.
Another old saying is “you can’t move forward unless you know where you came from” and what i mean is that Brian knows who paved the way for him, artists/musicians such as George Duke, Brecker Bros, David Sanborn, Tower of Power, Earth, Wind & Fire…¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† I admire his taste since all of these guys are big heroes of mine as well!

The picture is the frontside of his album “Bringing Back The Funk” and in the liner notes he writes¬† that the it’s him as a kid diggin’ some Earth, Wind & Fire!
He attended and graduated MacArthur High School on which his father was a musical teacher. In an interwiew 2012 he said that his grandpa was a civil engineer and his mother a drafter. Due to this he began studying architecture but quit since he was struggling with the math. Instead he moved to Chicago, Illnois and attended DePaul University.
Picture showing Brian and his like mentor the man who gave him his first record              deal, Bud Harner.

While beeing at the university he gathered some musicians and began working on his demo cd and send it to the only person he knew in L.A., Bud Harner who gave him his first record deal. The album was released in 1994 and was called “Long Night out“, picture below. On this album he played the most instruments himself thou with a little help from his friends lol.

He met his wife Michelle Haley Culbertson in college but they were officially introduced¬† at Brian’s first concert in 1994. Wife Micaela provided background vocals on his earlier albums plus featured vocalist on his christmas album A Soulful Christmas”.

Picture above Brian with his wife Michelle.
Thou his roots are in the funk and fusion of the 70:s he has worked with many of today’s stars of r&b, smooth jazz such as Ledisi (vocals), David Benoit (piano), Paul Brown (guitar), Dave Koz(sax), Chris Botti (trumpet) to just name a few.

Picture above shows Brian in the present of legends since 3 of 4 guys here are ex EWF members. Sorry not sure who guy in glasses are the other from left to right are Larry Dunn, Sheldon Reynolds, Maurice White and Brian himself. This picture is taken from the “Bringing Back The Funk” sessions.
If you’re interested in checking out Brian’s music then there’s 4 albums including the christmas one that stands out and those are, besides already mentioned christmas one and “Bringing back…“, “Live From The Inside” a live album and his most recently one released 2014 called “Another Long Night Out“. Now wait a minute here there’s something familiar about that tilte…true story it is, almost the same as his first 20 years earlier. He went back in time to revisit and rerecord his first album and once again explore his roots. Once this album there are some session veterans such as Steve Lukather, cofounder and leader of Toto, drummer Ricky Lawson, guitarist Lee Ritenour, bass player Nathan East etc.
Below some pics from the sessions of his latest album.
First we got Chuck Loeb then to Steve Lukather, Ricky Lawson and Nathan East.

Ok so the song i’ve choosed is taken from the earlier mentioned live album “Live From The Inside” recorded at the classic and legendary Capitol Studios, L.A. Picture below shows the exterior of Capitol Studios. Now you’ll recognize it from dozens of tv-series and movies.

The song is called “Get It On” and it features Dave Koz on the tenor sax plus a bunch of other top notch L.A. session players and boy these cats definetely knows and have the ability to swing like crazy here plus it very slick!! Enjoy your listening!!
